How Temperature and Humidity Affects Exterior Painting
TONY • January 11, 2021

Sometimes, even when you’ve hired the best exterior remodeler, other factors that are completely out of your control can cause your home improvement project to fail. One such example is the weather. Exterior painting, in particular, can be very finicky about temperature requirements. While most modern paint products can be applied over a much wider range of temperatures, using them outside these accepted levels can be a huge waste of time, effort and money.

Hire Pros for a Painting Job

With winter reaching its peak, one of the most common questions homeowners ask about exterior painting is “when is it too cold to paint?”

The Types of Paint

Acceptable temperatures for painting your siding can depend on the type of paint you will use. Paint can cure and treat differently depending on temperature and humidity, which is why your contractors may recommend certain products depending on when you schedule your painting.

  • Oil-based paints can be used for really low temperatures ranging from 45 to 90 degrees. They can be a little more forgiving than other types of paint, but they can also be a little bit on the expensive side.
  • Latex paints, on the other hand, are a more affordable product, but they can’t be used during 50-degree days or colder. Luckily, there are specially formulated latex paints that can be used in the cold. These products have a working temperature of up to 36 degrees.

Humidity as a Factor

Aside from temperature, your painting will also consider humidity before applying paint products. Too much humidity can cause paints to leach, causing discoloration even on newly-painted surfaces. Humidity can also affect the protective qualities of your paint, putting your exteriors at a greater risk for various problems.
