Your Local Expert Cedar Shake Roofer For Seattle

Cedar wood shake roof installation requires a combination of precision, craftsmanship, and expertise. This specialized skill set involves a keen eye for detail, as each shake must be carefully aligned and secured to ensure proper water drainage and ventilation. Knowledge of roofing techniques and tools is essential, as the installation process involves cutting, nailing, and shaping the wood shakes to fit seamlessly together. A deep understanding of the material itself is also crucial, as cedar shingles are a natural product that can vary in thickness, size, and quality. Roofers must be adept at assessing the substrate, ensuring proper underlayment, and implementing strategies to safeguard against potential issues like leaks and deterioration. Beyond technical skills, patience and a commitment to the craft are essential when working with wooden shingles, as their longevity and aesthetic appeal depend greatly on the installer's expertise. With proper installation, wood shake roofs can provide a beautiful aesthetic while also protecting your home.

The Appeal & Benefits of Cedar Shake Roofing

Cedar shake shingles offer a range of benefits that make them a popular choice for roofing:

Natural Aesthetics: Cedar shakes showcase a rustic and timeless beauty that adds character and curb appeal to any home. Their warm, earthy tones and natural variations create a unique and charming visual appeal.

Insulation: Cedar is an excellent natural insulator, helping to regulate indoor temperatures. This can lead to energy savings by reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling.

Durability: Cedar is a dense and sturdy wood that can withstand harsh weather conditions, including wind, rain, and UV rays. When properly maintained, cedar shakes can have a long lifespan.

Resistance to Insects and Decay: Cedar contains natural oils and compounds that make it resistant to insects like termites and decay-causing fungi. This inherent protection contributes to the longevity of cedar shake shingles.

Ventilation: Cedar shakes are installed with a certain level of spacing, allowing for proper ventilation beneath the shingles. This can help prevent moisture buildup and reduce the risk of mold and rot.

Environmental Sustainability: Cedar is a renewable resource, and its production has a lower environmental impact compared to other roofing materials. Additionally, cedar shake shingles are biodegradable, reducing waste in landfills.

Aging Gracefully: Over time, cedar shakes develop a silvery-gray patina that adds to their character and appeal. This natural aging process contributes to the charm of cedar roofing.

Easy Shingle Replacement: In the event that individual shakes become damaged, they can be replaced relatively easily without the need to replace the entire roof.

Sound Insulation: The density of cedar shake shingles can help reduce outdoor noise, providing a quieter indoor environment.

Cedar Shake Roof Maintenance

Regular maintenance is key to extending the lifespan and performance of your cedar shake roof. It is recommended to schedule maintenance approximately every five years to ensure that your roof remains in optimal condition. Treatment Application

Washing the cedar shake roof helps to remove dirt, debris, and moss that may have accumulated over time. This not only enhances the appearance of your roof but also prevents the growth of mold and rot. Our professional team utilizes gentle yet effective cleaning methods to ensure that your cedar shakes are not damaged during the process.

In addition to washing, periodic air cleaning is crucial to eliminate leaves, branches, and other debris that can clog the spaces between the shakes. This allows for proper ventilation, preventing moisture buildup and minimizing the risk of mold and rot.

Another important aspect of cedar shake roof maintenance is the application of preservative treatment. This treatment helps to protect the wood from weathering, UV rays, and moisture. It is typically applied exclusively during the warmer months to ensure optimal effectiveness.

Common Signs That Your Cedar Roof Needs Repair or Replacement

While proper maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your cedar shake roof, there may come a time when repairs or even a full replacement are necessary. Being aware of the signs that indicate potential issues with your roof can help you take prompt action and prevent further damage. Here are some common signs that your cedar roof needs repair or replacement:

  1. Curling or Cupping Shingles: Over time, cedar shake shingles can start to curl or cup, losing their original shape. This can happen due to moisture exposure or natural aging. Curling or cupping shingles can compromise the integrity of your roof and may lead to leaks.
  2. Cracked or Split Shingles: Damage such as cracks or splits in individual shingles can occur due to moisture absorption or extreme weather conditions. These damaged shingles can allow water to penetrate and cause leaks in your home.
  3. Moss or Algae Growth: If you notice moss or algae growth on your cedar roof, it could indicate excessive moisture retention. Moss and algae can hold moisture against the shingles, leading to rot and decay over time.
  4. Missing or Loose Shingles: Strong winds or severe weather events can cause shingles to become dislodged or loose. Missing or loose shingles can expose the underlying roof structure to water damage and increase the risk of leaks. It's important to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage to your roof.
  5. Rot or Decay: Over time, cedar shakes can deteriorate due to moisture exposure and natural aging. If you notice signs of rot or decay, such as soft or spongy shingles, it may indicate that your roof needs immediate attention. Failing to address rot or decay can lead to structural damage and compromise the overall integrity of your roof.
  6. Leaks or Water Stains: If you find water stains on your ceilings or walls, it's a strong indication of a leak in your cedar shake roof. Leaks can occur due to damaged or aging shingles, improper installation, or inadequate flashing. It's crucial to pinpoint the source of the leak and repair it promptly to prevent further water damage to your home.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tony's Roofcare has taken care of our roof for 34 years. Our first roof was cedar shake and we had it treated about every 3-4 years until we replaced it with a composition roof by Tony's.

They also air clean our roof about 2 times a year as we have a lot of Fir trees around our home. Their service is Great! Tony's is first class in our opinion and will continue to  use them. Thanks Tony's!

We had our entire roof replaced by Tonys Roofcare. It was quick, efficient, and the contractors were communicative the entire time. We had them install an extra vent for a dryer that wasn't properly vented and they not only did so, but they connected the hose for us too. The bid was the middle bid for us and entirely reasonable. The roof was done in two days. Our siding got a little dinged up, and the contractors patched it for us but it just wasn't the same so Tonys came out and replaced the piece entirely. The old roof was cedar shake, and the new roof is impeccable. It changes the entire look of the home and it is much cooler inside now that the roof is replaced.

We have used Tony's Roofcare several times. Probably 4+ for maintenance of a shake roof. I have always had reasonable pricing, great work and great response from Tony in the event of any issues during the project.

Shelly B. - Yelp Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My roof had a small leak in it so I got several bids to replace it and get a new roof. The bids seemed pretty high which was hard as my wife was battling cancer. Tony's was the only company that offered a repair option at a fraction of the cost of the other bids. They repaired the roof, treated it and gave me a 5 year warranty. No leaks for all 5 Years. After that I had them come look at my roof again. They offered to do the same and they did with another 5 year warranty. Again no leaks. 6 years later, I called them again and they inspected my 29 year old shake roof and told me it was done, time for a new one. Their bid was competitive, even lower than some of my bids from 12 years earlier so they got the job. Their workers worked long hours and got the job done in 3 1/2 days. It looks great and we are very happy with their workmanship.
