Fall Maintenance Tips for Residential Roofs
TONY • September 13, 2019

Fall begins in a few weeks time, which means you need to plan your upcoming roof maintenance routine. You wouldn’t want to have to deal with a leaking roof in the middle of winter. Here are some roofing maintenance tips for the fall season.

Clean Your Gutters

You’re bound to find more leaves in your gutters during the fall season so it only makes sense to clean your gutters. Always use cleaning gloves when scooping out leaves, dirt and debris as there may be sharp objects like branches. Flush out remaining dirt and stray granules using a garden hose. Once dried, scrape old sealant and reapply. A gutter protection system can help reduce your gutter system’s maintenance requirements.

Inspect Your Roof for Damage

You can perform a roofing inspection without having to climb onto the roof. All you need is a good pair of binoculars to inspect your roof visually, and take note if you find signs of roof damage or missing flashing and shingles. Some homeowners prefer to take the high-tech route by using a camera mounted on a remote-controlled drone. Whatever method you prefer, make sure that you call your roofing contractor for roof repair in case you find damaged or missing roofing sections.

Trim the Trees

If you have trees in your yard, make sure none of the branches are touching the roofing surface. Sharp branches may scratch and poke at the roofing surface, which may expose the backing material to water damage. A local arborist can safely trim your trees without harming it.

Inspect the Attic

Bring a flashlight, climb into the attic, and look for signs of moisture damage: water stains on wood parts like trusses and decking are indicators of a roof leak. If insulation is installed under the roof deck, parts of it may appear clumped from exposure to moisture. Also, if the attic feels warm and humid, it may have ventilation issues that need to be addressed by a roofing professional.
