4 Safety Features Every Deck Should Have
TONY • September 13, 2022

An outdoor deck is a multifunctional addition to a residence. From dedicating a place for afternoon get-togethers to finding reprieve from a busy schedule, it provides the space you need to spark up your life at home. But when building a deck, you also want to make sure it is as safe as possible. Here are four safety features that can help you achieve that.

1. Railings

A deck railing is a feature that prevents guests from falling from the deck platform and onto the ground. It should be installed on decks that are 30 inches or more in height, although it is not recommended on low-lying decks as the risk of falling is low. Railings should be at least three feet high.

2. Sealants

Because a deck is constantly exposed to the onslaught of weather, it must be thoroughly sealed or coated to resist damage. Another reason for this addition is safety. It is common for household residents to walk on a deck barefoot, and the sealant provides the necessary protection to prevent the person from getting splinters, which can lead to infections.

3. Ledger Boards

The ledger board provides the structural support that the deck needs to remain strong for years to come. Pressure-treated wood is recommended for this application. The boards must be completely smooth and perfectly aligned before installation.

4. Flashing

Flashing is not a strict requirement, but it is a good addition to decks where large volumes of water collect during rainfalls. This guard carries rainwater or snowmelt to the ground where it is drained. Without flashing, the chance for mold to form and spread also increases.
